Carnival of Baden

The Badenerfasnacht is an integral part of the culture and customs of the city of Baden and takes place from Dirty Thursday, 27 February to Ash Wednesday, 5 March in the city centre. For several decades, a varied programme consisting of street carnival, schnitzelbanks and parades has guaranteed a colourful hustle and bustle in the city. The various events are known far beyond the city and cantonal borders and attract over 10,000 carnival enthusiasts from young to old from all over Switzerland to Baden every year.

Füdlibürger

Since its foundation in 1930, the Spanischbrödlizunft's mission has been to revive the Baden carnival. Every year, the Füdlibürger is charged with all the misdeeds that have taken place in and around Baden during the past year. He is transported on a horse-drawn cart from the lower station square through the city to the scaffold in the ditch under the high bridge. There, his misdeeds from the past year are tried before the carnival court of the Spanischbrödlizunft Baden. He is then found guilty and sentenced to death by fire. He is put to death amid flames, accompanied by a bang and the sound of trumpets. Traditionally, the Baden carnival begins with the judge's verdict: 'Executioner, light the fire; the Baden carnival begins.'
